FAQs
Missed classes will not be refunded or credited. You may be able to schedule make-up time to work without instruction during business hours by appointment and during the session for which it was paid to work on projects independently. Missed classes cannot be carried over into the next session unless WE cancel the class for extenuating circumstances (weather, emergency, etc.)
Hart & Happy Studio may cancel classes if minimum enrollments aren't met or other extenuating circumstances. All participants will be notified within 24 hours of the class if we need to cancel.
Dress comfortably, as it can get messy in the studio! We recommend bringing your own apron. If you are throwing on the wheel, we recommend bringing an old hand towel and an apron or old shirt to wear.
For safety, tie back long hair and cut fingernails to prevent snagging nails and getting hair caught in the clay or the wheelhead.
We have limited seating and materials available, so registration is required for all classes. It's best to register at least 24 hours before the class to ensure availability.
If a class is full, you may be added to a waitlist.
Street parking is available downtown. There is no designated lot.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to the start of your class or workshop.
You are welcome to use anything on the large wire shelves across from the kilns. These are for community use, such as tools, rollers, textures, cookie cutters, etc. Just be sure to clean and return them to their respective bins.
- Do not borrow tools or other items from others without asking.
- Do not use any glaze ingredients on the shelves. If the glaze you need is out, please ask and someone will mix it for you by the next class.
The #1 rule of glazing: DO NOT GLAZE THE BOTTOM of pieces. Allow at least a quarter to a half-inch up the sides from the bottom of the piece UNGLAZED to allow for glaze drips. Glaze on the bottom or even on the edges of the bottom will fuse the piece to the shelf. Your piece will be ruined and the kiln shelf will be damaged. Be sure to wax the bottom and up the sides with liquid wax provided on the glaze table. If you have any questions, please ask!
If you do not follow the waxing and glazing rules, and your piece drips onto the shelf, you will be charged $10 per occurrence to chisel the glaze off. If there is so much damage that we have to replace the shelf, there will be a $50 charge.
If two glazes are layered together, there will most likely be some running. If you layer, please keep the top layer toward the top third of the piece. please allow extra unglazed space at the bottom.
Do not dip and hold pieces in the glaze for more than a couple seconds. Too much of any glaze will cause running.
Do not double dip. If you miss a spot when dipping, please use a brush to touch up the missed area.
If it is determined that the glaze is not applied properly, the piece will not be fired and will be returned to your shelf to fix the problem.
Even if you waxed the piece before you dipped, you still have to WIPE THE EXCESS off with a damp sponge. Some glazes still cling to the wax.
Please clean up behind yourself before you leave.
- Clean the wheel pans out and dump collected water and slip into the big bucket. Empty small water buckets outside behind the building.
- Sponge off the wheel and the table and place the pedal on the wheel table so we can mop the floors easily. The large half sponges work best.
- Wash pans and tools in the LEFT sink first to get off most of the clay, then finish up the sink on the right. Clay will clog up the pipes and the left sink has the best clay trap.
- NO CLAY IN THE RIGHT-HAND SINK, PLEASE!
- Please put cups, tools, brushes and anything else you have used/washed back where you found them, even if they are still wet from washing.
- Please mop up any glaze drips, clay bits, or splatter around your work area, the wheels, and glaze station when you are done using them. This is for everyone's safety and health. Clay and glze on the floor gets walked on and creates clay dust.
For your safety, please do not try to turn the kiln on/off or open the lid. Do not touch the kilns if they are hot.
Studio members have access to the studio independently, but not during glaze firing due to fumes.
